Whenever I want to think when I read, instead of merely learning, I turn to a book by Eugene Peterson. Part of it is that a lot of his books are written specifically for pastors, but even those that aren't are just full of counterintuitive and reflective gems like this
"Wisdom is the art of living well in whatever specific circumstances we find ourselves."
The best thing Peterson does, though, is live out of sync with the hyper-frenetic culture around us. He's a man who understands sabbath, and creation-rhythms, and hospitality. All rare. The Peterson books I recommend are
- Under the Unpredictable Plant: an exploration in vocational holiness
- A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: discipleship in an instant society
- The Contemplative Pastor: returning to the art of spiritual direction
- Working the Angles: the shape of pastoral integrity
- Five Smooth Stones for Pastoral Work
- Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places: a conversation in spiritual theology
-Nicholas Stanton Roark
